However, the theaters also tend to be misleading in terms of whether or not their fancy technologies provide any benefit to the viewers. So, when XD claims to be 11.1 surround sound compatible, it is true that their sound system has 11 channels. Generally, the theaters are factually correct in their claims. Instead, every theater chain can make any claim they wish without any fear of it being debunked or disproven. Premium movie experiences aren’t like nutrition labels, which have a regulatory body overseeing and fact-checking their claims. A Note on “Premium Movie Theaters” in Generalīefore we discuss XD theaters, IMAX, RPX, 4DX, D-BOX, or Dolby Cinema, there is one thing you should know - advertising tactics of “premium movie theaters” are essentially the wild west. The only downside is that the tickets generally cost ~$2.50 more than the same ticket in a standard Cinemark theater. In the simplest terms, here is what separates Cinemark XD theaters from a standard movie theater: more comfortable reclining seats, a larger screen, and louder speakers. XD theaters have oversized screens that Cinemark advertises as “wall-to-wall” and “floor-to-ceiling.”Įarly XD theaters featured 7.1 surround sound, but most XD theaters have been upgraded to an 11.1-enabled surround sound as of 2022. The lawsuit was dropped after a settlement was reached, and IMAX and Cinemark XD are now two of the most popular premium theaters in the U.S. In fact, IMAX actually filed a lawsuit against Cinemark years ago, claiming that Cinemark XD had stolen trade secrets from IMAX and that XD is essentially a copy of IMAX. So in the end I’m glad I got to experience the D-Box but good chance I won’t be seeing many movies with these seats unless Moviepass is covering it.What is an XD Movie? Is Cinemark XD Worth the Money? Cinemark XD is often compared to IMAX, which makes sense because the two theaters are similar in a number of ways. The guy in front of me struggled to drink his drink from his straw several times. Although I didn’t purchase any I noticed the couple next to me spill a good handful of popcorn during one of the fight scenes. The sudden jerks and hard shakes may not be comfortable for you.Īlso be careful with your snacks. I’m no doctor but if you have a bad back I wouldn’t recommend these seats or at least on the highest intensity. You would only get the effect a few times and that would be just a waste.Īnother issue you have to watch for is the intensity level. Imagine spending that amount to watch “The Quiet Place”. I believe that you should only purchase the seats for movies with lots of action. I think because the theater was sold out that was the only reason why I was able to get Moviepass to cover my purchase. I personally think the $18 is a bit steep for such a limited experience. Honestly, took my movie experience to another level. When thing exploded you felt the sudden pounds on your seat. During spaceship and plane scenes you felt the shakes. Infinity Wars was the best movie to watch for my 1st D-Box experience because it was nonstop action which the seat adjusted to every fall and punch. Your able to adjust the intensity and I believe GO Big or Go home so I turned that bad boy to the max. Now mind you these seats move and groove with the movie. In the theater there were 2 rows of these seats just like in the 1st picture posted and I sat dead in the middle. I somehow was able to purchase the ticket with my Moviepass so BONUS!!! As I was purchasing my ticket at one of the touchscreen kiosk I stumbled across the option, I was interested in seeing the very next showing and the DBox seats were the only available seats. Upon arrival I had no idea what a DBox even was. Today, I had the pleasure of watching The Avengers Infinity War at a Cinemark Theater in Los Angeles using the D-Box 4D Experience Seats. The result is an incredible cinematic motion experience that moves your seat in sync with the action on the screen to immerse viewers in the movie so they feel like they’re in it. To create this unique experience requires highly-specialized hardware and software that store, manage and transmit motion codes to D-BOX-enabled cinema. They have removed the line between you and the screen to create hyper-realistic, immersive, one-of-a-kind entertainment experiences that pull you into the movie. With D-BOX, you control the intensity so you can move with the movie and feel every scene as if you were in it. D-BOX is changing the way you watch movies by moving the body and sparking the imagination through motion.
